Brown discharge: Ask questions

The woman should always be attentive to her health and, when observing any strange signs, seek professional help to find out what this is about.

The appearance of a brown discharge, for example, is frequent and may raise concerns for some women. And really should not be ignored. Below, Alessandra Bedin Rubino, gynecologist at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, answered the most common questions on the subject.

What does brown discharge mean?

Gynecologist Alessandra explains that the so-called brown discharge can occur for several reasons. And without a doctor's appointment you cannot diagnose them. "But in general, it is some very small amount of blood (coming from the uterus or the vagina itself) that joins with the vaginal discharge and turns brown," he says.

Other causes, according to the gynecologist, would be: uterine or vaginal infections, early normal pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy (in the fallopian tubes, for example), threatened abortion, premenopause, hormonal changes, onset of teenage menstruation, cancer of the cervix, endometrial cancer, uterine polyps, uterine fibroids, among others.

Incidence

Being something that happens for several reasons, it is very common. “For the same reason, there is no way to estimate how many women have brown discharge. But, can you say that, at least once in a lifetime, the woman has / will have this kind of discharge ?, says gynecologist Alessandra.

How to treat it?

Precisely because brown discharge occurs for different reasons, it is impossible to answer this question without a medical diagnosis. However, as the most frequent and relatively simple cause is menstrual leak, gynecologist Alessandra Bedin makes some observations.

"Menstrual leakage may be related to small hormonal variations, whose rates are not enough to stabilize the endometrium (internal layer of the uterus, which varies during the menstrual cycle), and it eventually escapes and leaves," explains the doctor.

"In low-dose pills, which are the most used today, this is frequent, and represents more than 50% of cases," adds the gynecologist. “But if they were taken correctly, daily, within the recommended two-hour maximum range, there is nothing to be done, just watch. If it is prolonged, maybe changing the pill is an interesting idea, since the discharge bothers the woman a lot ?, he says.

Is there a way to prevent?

To prevent menstrual leakage from occurring, "in addition to taking proper pills, given by the gynecologist especially to you, taking them at the right time is very important," remembers gynecologist Alessandra.

Get medical help!

"Because there are numerous causes (and consequences), whenever brown discharge occurs, it is necessary to seek help from the gynecologist," concludes the doctor.

Maybe it's just a menstrual leak, but it's always worth remembering that brown discharge may be a sign of some serious problem. Only with a professional diagnosis can the case be treated as best as possible. Always be aware of your intimate health!
