Dr. Pet gives tips on pets for children of every age.

There is nothing better than having a pet to brighten the family and especially play with the kids. Research indicates that pets can bring numerous benefits to the health and well-being of everyone, including adults. But how to choose the right pet for your home and when is the appropriate time to present your child with a pet?

Alexandre Rossi, Dr Pet, a specialist in animal behavior, says that we must first analyze the size of the environment and whether the family can give all the attention the pet deserves. The decision to have a pet should be discussed between parents and family members, according to the routine and expectation of the people of the house. A child, no matter how responsible, is not mature enough to take care of an animal alone, so the ultimate responsibility will always be with adults. One must analyze whether, at that moment, the family is prepared to take on a small animal in the family ?, he comments.

Children under 5 years

To bring joy and harmony to your home, it is best to choose the pet that is appropriate for your child's age. By the age of 5 the child is learning to be careful and empathetic about pets, but still cannot handle them very gently. A good option is a guinea pig, who is not such a fragile animal, likes to interact and be manipulated, and at the same time does not require constant attention ?, says Dr. Pet.

Parents can also guide children to care for the pet and learn to have responsibilities. "The child can play with him and help care by putting water and food," says Dr. Pet. He even warns to avoid very fragile animals. "Avoid giving the child hamsters and rabbits, as these animals need more delicate handling to avoid biting or running away," he says.

At 8 years old

During this time, children already appear to be responsible and like to take care of some little animal. • A small, easy-to-care pet is indicated as the child begins to be more responsible. But it's interesting to start with an animal that doesn't require as much attention as a cat or dog. Minnows or gerbils [rodent], for example, are indicated. Can little ones help clean, feed and interact with the pets ?, recommends Dr. Pet.

10 years old

With variety of breeds and sizes, kittens and dogs may be the best choice for children 10 years and older. At 10 years old, children already show a keen interest in animals and a greater responsibility, so it is a good age to have a dog or cat. It is also important to let them play, brush, care and take the little animal for a walk ?, says Dr. Pet.

Remember that there are millions of dogs that are in shelters to be adopted. Getting your child to help choose a little friend may be the best solution!

Attention parents!

Regardless of age and pet choice, supervising children while they are near the pet is essential to prevent incidents. Another necessary care is also to guide the little ones to treat the animals with affection. It is important to pass on to children the importance of being kind, not pulling or tightening their hair and respecting the limits of each pet. Also explain to your child that, just like us, animals need water, food and care? Dr. Pet advises.

Mirror of yours!

Children mimic their parents' attitudes, so it is essential for them to realize that you also take good care of your pet. “Our attitudes and the way we take care of the pet set an example for children. When parents realize that they are taking good care of the pet, is praising the baby always a great incentive ?, concludes Dr. Pet.
