Gestational diabetes

Pregnancy is a period that requires a lot of care from women, as there are numerous modifications that can bring some dysfunctions to the body. This is the case of gestational diabetes, which among other factors can be caused by hormonal changes and overweight.

Inadequate diet, family history of illness, hypertension, preeclampsia in current pregnancy, or babies over four pounds in previous pregnancies are also among the risk factors.

What is gestational diabetes?

The disease is characterized by increased blood sugar content and arises mainly in the second trimester of pregnancy. Although gestational diabetes recedes on its own, it can affect both mother and baby.

Pregnancy diabetes usually appears without signs and symptoms are often confused with those of other health problems.

The main symptoms of gestational diabetes are bloating, vomiting, blurred vision, fatigue, thirst, excessive urination, bladder or vagina infections. Therefore, it is important to check blood glucose levels through blood tests in the first months and the diagnosis of the disease early in pregnancy is extremely important, as it can avoid complications with the fetus and problems at the time of delivery.

Prevention and treatment

When gestational diabetes is diagnosed, some steps are needed to control the disease. The treatment of gestational diabetes should be accompanied by the obstetrician together with a nutrition professional. The use of medication is indicated in only a few cases.

Both to treat and prevent gestational diabetes, the ideal is to maintain a healthy diet and without exaggeration. Women suffering from diabetes in pregnancy should follow a balanced menu, avoiding excess sweets, fats and carbohydrates and giving preference to whole foods. Regular physical activity also helps in prevention.
