Homemade wax: recipes, opinions and care needed

Going to a hair salon or beauty salon monthly is part of the beauty routine of many women. Most of them consider these places more appropriate and comfortable for hair removal. After all, the client just needs to lie on the stretcher and let the responsible professional take care of the service.

However, paying for a professional to shave once a month, or even every 15 days, can weigh heavily on a woman's pocket, especially if she has the habit of shaving various parts of her body. Also, with the rush of everyday life, not all women can make an appointment with the epilator within business hours. It is mainly these two factors that lead many of them to resort to home methods.

For years and years, sugar and lemon blends have been used as an alternative to hair removal. These are called homemade waxes.

But are they really a good solution for removing hair? What are the necessary precautions when preparing and using them? Doubts like these make many women feel insecure about waxing at home with this type of wax.

Flávia Sampaio, a beautician at Werner Coiffeur, points out that the advantages of using a homemade wax are value and practicality. This is because, in general, homemade waxes are made with few popular ingredients and, moreover, hair removal occurs in the comfort of one's own home.

Below you give two homemade wax recipes:

1. Wax with sugar and lemon

The recipe is suggestion of the beautician Flávia Sampaio:

Ingredients

  • 4 cups white refined sugar
  • 1 cup of pure lemon juice
  • 1 cup of water

Method of preparation

Put all ingredients in a pan and turn on medium heat. For about 20 minutes, stir the mixture into the pan until it looks like a caramel. To find out if the wax is right, place 1 tablespoon of water on a dessert plate and then half a spoon of wax on this plate? Observe if the sides begin to rise and check with the index finger and tweezers that the plate wax is pulling. If it is not already pulling, return to low heat for a few more minutes until the wax is in the right spot ?, explains Flavia.

Still according to the beautician, homemade wax can be used on all parts of the body such as armpits, groin, legs.

However, it is noteworthy that it is necessary to be very careful with the temperature of the wax not to get burned. In addition, if wax is used on the face (to remove hair from the fluff), it is essential to wash the area several times after waxing, as the lemon can cause sunburn if exposed.

2. Honey wax

Another possibility is to use honey to make homemade wax. It is indicated for the most sensitive regions of the skin, such as fluff, armpits and groin.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon water

Method of preparation

Put the sugar slowly in a pan over the fire, stirring constantly. Then add the honey, always stirring, until it creates a thick syrup. When the syrup is ready, add half a lemon (juice) and keep stirring until it boils. Add the other half of the lemon and then the water. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for five minutes. Put the wax in a glass jar.

Different opinions about using homemade wax

Leticia Mendes, 30, an architect, says that she has shaved her legs, groin and armpits, always in beauty salons, for about 15 years. “I see no reason to use homemade waxes. They take work and cause a lot of dirt to do, in my opinion. But I never tried to use them. I trust the products used by a professional epilator much more?

Nanda A. Ferreira, 34, secretary, says she has used homemade waxes. “I sometimes mixed sugar, water and lemon to make a wax. I think the recipe is a lot cheaper than going to a salon to shave, so I think it's worth it, yes!

Juliana Melotto, 20, a student, also prefers to shave with a professional. “My epilator comes home, which is even better. But even if I had to go to a salon, would I rather? Never used homemade wax ?, he says.

Care needed with homemade waxing

Regardless of the recipe used, care is essential when performing hair removal at home. According to the beautician Flávia, when using a homemade wax, in some cases, the woman may not get the same result offered in a salon and is at risk of being allergic to any ingredient in the mixture.

In this second case, an indispensable tip is to perform a touch test to see if you have any allergies or rejection of the ingredients. The recommendation is to wait around 24 hours to be sure, if there is no reaction, you can start the procedure.

It is very important to be very careful with the temperature of the wax to avoid the risk of getting burned.

The wax that was used for hair removal should not be reused but discarded on the spot. But if on a piece of unused wax, it can be stored in a glass container with a lid. If the wax gets hard, you should heat it in a water bath until it returns to its initial texture.

After home shaving, do not go out in the sun and avoid applying products such as deodorants or moisturizers on the same day. Also do not wear tight clothing or clothing that may cause friction with the shaved area.

It is worth noting that it is interesting to use homemade waxes made with sugar sporadically, as they tend to be more aggressive than others. If in doubt, be sure to consult a trusted professional before joining home hair removal.
