Pediatricians call for ban on sale of baby walkers

The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) brings a warning to the population regarding infant walkers and the risks to child health and development caused by the product. With the walker, the child has access to places that she would not have had if she was walking alone, especially the stairs, which could lead to a fall with serious injuries.

In addition to the risk of falling, pediatricians warn of defects in leg and spine bending that may develop during the learning period, as well as the acceleration of an important phase of the child who is crawling. As for the childish posture, it is said that the child's feet do not always touch the floor entirely, causing the so-called "ballerina's foot", which is the effect of when the child only tiptoes on the ground due to lack of support. and proper walker height.

With these arguments, the company made a request to INMETRO to ban the marketing and production of walkers, spread across countries such as Canada, where the product has already been banned.

On the other hand, some pediatricians claim that accidents happen anywhere and anytime, what should not be done is to leave the child alone free around the house, and that the walker does not influence the point of having their use prohibited. Families with young children confirm that their use does not harm them, provided they are monitored and that the walker assists in the balance and independence of walking in the learning phase of the little ones.

It remains to wait what will be the answer given by INMETRO.
