Research reveals alarming data on children and the internet

A recent survey by software company McAfee has brought out very surprising data on how children use their computer and how parents perceive and deal with this habit, check out:

  • 74% of the 1,301 parents interviewed admitted not having time and not knowing how to check what their children do on the Internet;
  • Most of the 10-year-olds interviewed said they spend time seeing restricted sites, according to them "doing the wrong thing";
  • 85% of 351 children aged 10-12 admitted to having a Facebook account although this is only allowed after 13;
  • The same kids said they post their daily activities on the web, in addition to their email address and use various tactics to hide it from their parents;
  • One quarter of children said they clear their browser history after use to eliminate traces of online activity;
  • 17% of these kids delete instant messages and videos because they know that if their parents saw it, they would disapprove;
  • The same behaviors were observed in adolescents and young adults up to 23 years old;
  • Of the 1,173 young adults interviewed, 46% said they would be more careful about what they do if they knew their parents were watching;
  • The US survey also found that you usually spend 6 hours a day using the internet on your computer, smartphone or tablet;
  • 95% of respondents had at least one social network and 44% said they check the network frequently.

While there is a lot of good content on the internet, there is also content that is inappropriate for certain ages and there are also risks of overexposure on the internet, such as cyberbullying and hijacking. It is therefore essential for parents to keep an eye out, not spying, but to have an open dialogue with their children and to guide them in the best way.
