Which is better to lose weight: run 30min or walk 60min?

Anyone who wants to stay healthy knows that daily practice of at least 30 minutes of 5x physical exercise per week is essential. If the goal is to lose weight, the activity should be a little more intense: one hour a day. For the beginner, a brisk walk is a great option. But if you don't have much time available, is a 30-minute run as beneficial as 1 hour of slower exercise?

To lose a pound a week, you need to cut or burn a total of 500 calories a day. If you take 250 from your diet, you get 250 to burn with exercise. Check out the calorie expenditure comparison for the one-hour walk and the half-hour run:

  • A 60-minute walk at 6.4km / h spends 243 calories
  • A 60-minute walk at 7.4km / h spends 270 calories
  • A 30-minute run at 9.6km / h spends 270 calories
  • A 30-minute run at 10.7km / h spends 300 calories

That is, 60 minutes of walking (7.4 km / h) or 30 minutes of running (9.6 km / h) burn the same amount of calories. But if you tend to walk slower, you certainly won't get the same benefits from running with walking.

One tip is, even if you have 60 minutes available, do 30 minutes of running and alternate with 20 minutes doing muscle training, which also helps you increase metabolism and burn calories faster. Also do 10 minutes of stretching, important to prevent injury and avoid pain.
