Why not wear makeup every day?

High coverage concealer, cream base, compact powder, triple volume mascara, natural color blush, eyeshadow quartet, lipstick? All of these items fit the description of the ideal arsenal to hide those little flaws in the appearance of the face that bother you so much.

Makeup has been used over the centuries to make the human face ever more perfect, so much of the world's female population cannot live without it. Applying daily would be the ideal solution for an always flawless appearance, if not for one detail: it is often said that wearing makeup too often can be detrimental to skin health, causing acne, increasing oiliness or drying out the face.

Dermatologist Helena Zantut clarifies the main doubts about the subject and gives tips to avoid the problem.

Is makeup actually harmful to skin health?

Helena explains that, depending on the quality of the products used, the skin may suffer more or less damage. However, according to the dermatologist, even the most reputable brands harm the health of the skin and pores.

Makeup has to be of good quality. Today we have many, like MAC, Vichy, La Roche Posay, for example, but unfortunately [these brands] are imported and sometimes not sold here in Brazil ?, says the expert.

Asked what kind of skin problems can be caused by the continued use of makeup, Helena says that "the main one is contact dermatitis (allergies), and skin blemishes."

Do makeup products designed to treat acne and other skin problems really work or are they harmful?

Several manufacturers advertise, on packaging and even in advertising, that their makeup products would also have a medicine function against acne, blemishes and other skin problems. Helena argues that every type of product that promises miraculous results should be used with the advice of a dermatologist.

"Nowadays dermocosmetic labs are doing studies to combine the [patient-sought] treatment with the cosmetic and aesthetic part," she explains, "so much so that they already make protectors based, depigmenting, vitamin C, among others." This factor, however, does not mean that the product will treat the problem as promised.

Ideally, the information provided by the manufacturer should be compared with the guidance and opinion of a trusted expert. The dermatologist will know how to indicate the best products for each skin type, which can prevent problems such as allergies and irritations.

? The most modern [products of this type] today are BB cream and CC cream? there are already [some] of L'Oréal. Are there also acne treatments along with primer and base, among others?

How to prevent the use of makeup to harm the skin?

The precautions to prevent skin problems caused by excess makeup are well known to the female audience, but remember: "always remove all makeup before bed and always use a sunscreen before putting on makeup", concludes Helena.
