How to prevent home accidents

Home accidents always happen, some objects and situations that may be simple for adults, pose risks to children. And as children are increasingly curious, surprising adults all the time, extra attention needs to be paid to avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Staying indoors, the little ones are busy exploring the environment in many ways. To them everything looks like a toy, everything is interesting and fun. The child is unable to assess the hazard and the younger he is, the greater the risk of getting involved in accidents. And it is in the blink of an eye that they happen. Domestic accidents can range from minor scratches to asphyxiation, suffocation, burns, drowning and intoxication.


Check out some basic care tips that serve not only for moms but also so that grandparents, aunts, bridesmaids can prevent children from getting injured indoors.

Toys:When choosing a toy, the age and skills of the child should be taken into account. Small toys with parts that can easily come loose and be swallowed should be avoided. Also keep small objects out of the reach of children, such as coins, buttons, bottle caps.

Medicines: They should be kept in high places and preferably locked, as children are very observant and are always paying attention to everything adults do.


Sockets: Children may get shock by shaking the jacks. Therefore, use special protectors for the sockets and protect the bare wires.

Furniture: The layout of the furniture in each environment should be taken into account. Remove furniture that could facilitate children's access to windows and high places. Also beware of drawers and doors where children can hold their fingers.

Kitchen: Keep knives, scissors and other sharp objects in hard to reach places, such as matches and alcohol. Avoid using long tablecloths, it is a way to prevent the child from pulling and spilling hot food. On the stove, use the back burners and always keep the pan handles facing the center of the cooker to avoid pulling them. Also watch out for possible gas leaks, always check that the stove knobs and the gas hose are in order.


WC: Ideally, the bathroom door is locked and the toilet is always closed. Bathing only with an adult overseeing, a simple oversight can cause drowning. Before placing the child in the bathtub, mix the water. Put cold water first, then warm water and test the temperature. Razor blades and hair dryer should always be stored.

Windows, balconies and stairs: Anyone who has a child at home, and especially in an apartment, should install railings and safety nets on windows and balconies. Stairs should have handrails and the floor should not be slippery. Try to place barriers, guards and gates in all access leading to the stairs.

Service area: Buckets, bowls and other containers should always be kept empty and face down. Plastic bags can cause suffocation, so they should be well stored. The iron should never be left on when not in use and when unplugged, never let the cord unwind. In addition to the high temperature, iron offers risks due to its weight and electricity. Chemicals and cleaning agents are highly toxic and some are flammable, so they should be left in a safe place.

Garden: Know the plants of your garden well, some can be toxic and poisonous If they exist in your garden, it is preferable that they are removed or planted in places inaccessible to the little ones.

Play Places: Falls can cause serious injury, so make sure your playground toys are age-appropriate and watch out for hazards such as broken surfaces and signs of rust. The house slab is not a child's place to play, falls are almost always fatal. Child-directed toys should not be used near swimming pools, stairs, or other spaces that may pose a risk of accident. Teach children to fly a kite away from electrical wires only in open places.
