10 Common Mistakes in Bath Towel Care

The bath towel is a piece that is strongly linked to personal hygiene and in constant use in everyday life. Because it is always within reach, it is common for the part to wear and have a short service life. However, the durability of the product can be extended if some errors are avoided before, during and after use.

One of the points to note is the place of storage: it is essential that the towels are stored in a dry environment. "For ease of organization, it is ideal that the towels are all folded in the same way so that they are the same size and stackable without the risk of falling into the closet," suggests John Struck, product development technician at Altenburg

But storage is not the only aspect that needs attention in dealing with the part. Leaving the towel wet on the bed, for example, causes fungal and bacterial proliferation in the tissue.

Also, care especially at the time of washing and drying the towels is critical to preserving the material. Products such as fabric softeners and bleaches can damage fabric fibers as well as the use of steam iron.

What to avoid when taking care of the bath towel

1. Use fabric softener

Using the fabric softener causes the towels to lose their absorbency. One tip is to replace the product with vinegar: at the last rinse, add a glass of vinegar to the washing machine's softener compartment. Vinegar does not diminish the absorbent capacity of fibers, makes the fabric softer and even helps to preserve colors. Bleaches should also be avoided.

2. Mix with other clothes in wash

Ideally, towels should be washed separately. "Zippers, buttons and sharp objects can pull the threads of the fabric while washing the machine, so it's important not to mix them with the usual clothes," says Struck. In addition, separating towels by color eliminates the risk of stains.

3. Hang on hooks

It is common to have hooks or rings for hanging towels in the bathroom after use. However, these accessories make it difficult to dry, which can cause fungal and bacterial proliferation in the tissue. It is best to extend the towels completely open in the bathroom stall or clothesline.

4. Store before drying

If the use of hooks and rings can already cause fungal and bacterial proliferation, the habit of storing towels that are still damp has the same effect. Never fold a towel that is still damp. The same rule applies when you put it in the laundry basket: wait for it to be completely dry.

5. Steam ironing

Steam iron damages the fluff and gives the towel fabric a rough look. So when it comes to ironing your towel, the best thing to do is to avoid steam iron and set the correct temperature for cotton.

6. Dry in the dryer

Excessive use of dryer ends up damaging the fabric fibers. The best thing is to let the towels dry on the clothesline and preferably from the shade, as the sun can end up staining and fading the piece.

7. Wash infrequently

Towels get dirty quickly. To prevent it from getting dirty or smelly, it is ideal to wash it once or twice a week.

8. Always use the same towel

Using a towel, washing it and using it again will make the garment wear faster. Rotating your towels makes them used and washed less often. Thus, the durability of the pieces will be longer.

9. Putting In Touch With Cosmetics

When using the towel it is important to pay attention to cosmetics! "Products like suntan lotions, make-ups, creams, hydrogen peroxide and acetone can stain the fabric," Struck warns. Also beware of flavoring sachets: they can drop dyes and stain the piece.

10. Store in the bathroom

Because it is generally damp, the bathroom is not the place to store your clean towels. Prefer to keep them in dry, folded or rolled places.

By following the tips and avoiding these mistakes it is possible to keep your towels always well sanitized and beautiful, and give the pieces a much longer shelf life!
