1960s: How to assemble costumes and looks inspired by the rebel decade

The 60s were remarkable within the fashion universe, so much so that until today we dress as at that time. Several pieces that are part of the current wardrobe appeared in the 1960s. Influenced by Elvis Presley and a generation of baby boomers, the 1960s brought the leather jacket and miniskirt into the spotlight.

"Feminine, young, cheerful, innovative, free, rebellious and bold" style, it is with these adjectives that image consultant Juliana Burlamaqui defines the style of the 60's.

Fashion consultant Camila Diniz details the style of the era. "As a call to youth and freedom, rock and twist emerges with a revolutionary attitude, showing the end of a unique fashion."

From the 60's on, clothes started to be influenced by several aspects. “Fashion showed that more and more the way of dressing was actually linked to attitude and behavior,” adds Camila. And with that, several key pieces come to represent the universe of the 60's.

Top References for 60's Costumes

The 60's, due to its importance within the universe of fashion, ended up becoming the theme of many costumes and even parties. With the arrangement of so many pieces from the 60s in the closet, dressing up in season is not difficult at all. “A round skirt, a polka dot shirt and a doll's ponytail,” is Camila's tip for getting in the mood.

For Juliana, the skirt or dress should be super short. On the feet the doll shoe or the long boot. And can you abuse the big accessories for fun ?, is the recommendation of the consultant.

A few other pieces of the wardrobe can also help to create the 60's look. Choose a short dress with the straight colored silhouette or flashy print. If it is geometric, large-scale floral or even better psychedelic ?, suggests Juliana. For the feet, a doll-like shoe or high boot.

Big, eye-catching accessories with geometric shapes form the perfect complement to a 60's costume. Also use small bags and pantyhose, all help to look very similar to those used in the 60's.

Below you will find several looks to learn how to ride and dress up from the 60s:

Ball Costume

The ball costume is the most traditional in the 60s party. To assemble this costume, simply insert one of the pieces in dust, preferably a well-rounded skirt or a dress of the same style. Complement with accessories that leave the look even more with the face of the 60s: kitty glasses, doll-style shoes, scarves and gloves. Here are three examples of how you can create this look:

Hipster fantasy style

Also originating in the 1960s, hippie-style fantasy is striking in the following decade. However, a look with this style is also part of the 60s. To make costumes in this style, choose gowns and colorful pieces. Prints can also make the look even more hippie. Here's the example:

Psychedelic Fantasy Style

But that psychedelic style, with long boots and many geometric shapes is also an option for those who want to assemble a distinctive 60s costume. Be inspired by the style of British model and actress Twiggy who was a style reference at the time. Wear tube-style dresses, large accessories, and whimsical psychedelic look. The key pieces of the 60's

The 60's had several representative moments, going through many changes of style. The beginning brings the pieces that most represent the time, with skirts and dresses rolled. “These pieces gave the women a girlish look,” Camila says.

The little tubes came soon after, followed by the miniskirts and the cigarette pants. Towards the end of the decade, the clothes that began to be perpetuated with the hippies began to emerge in the 1970s.

Faced with so many styles and diversity, many pieces ended up becoming a reference within the 60s. However, the consultants selected which are the main pieces of the decade and which we still use: tube dress, miniskirt, doll shoes, long boots, bikini , jeans, leather jacket, cigar pants, gowns, geometric prints, psychedelic prints and hippie pieces.

According to Camila, the miniskirt is the most characteristic piece of the time and that, until today, rounds the wardrobe of women. "Created by the English Mary Quant and the French André Courrèges who, in fact, attributed the creation to the movement that came from the street, in an expression of feminism and freedom," explains the consultant.

Juliana also agrees with Camila and, for her, wearing a 60's inspired piece makes a look creative and very interesting. ? The ideal is to choose just one of the references and complement with basic pieces, not to be over or look fantasized ?, adds Juliana explaining how to adapt this look to today.

60s-inspired looks

Consultants Juliana and Camila have put together looks that can help us dress with references from this decade. Juliana also explains that the model Alexa Chung always dresses with pieces characteristic of the 60s.

Look with balls

The signature 60's pattern can come in any look. Be more discreet, as in the shirt below, or more flashy, the poas are already a classic in print and look beautiful in dresses, shirts and even pants.

Look with psychedelic print

More colorful prints and geometric shapes appeared in the 60s. Called psychedelic, the print remains current and is perfect in dresses. When complemented with a leather jacket, it makes the most of the 60s.

Look with midi skirt

Skirts just below the knee are also great references from the 60s that can be worn even today. Taking care with the proportions, since the length flattens the shortest, the piece is elegant and super feminine, matching all women.

Navy inspiration look

The navy look is also a good bet to dress in the 60s. Bet on striped shirts, preferably navy, cigarette pants and sneakers.

These inspirations can be worn both day and night, it all depends on what to wear and how to assemble the look. • Hair with top volume looks better at night because it is more sophisticated. A more neutral and not so short tube is perfect for a formal situation ?, determines Juliana.

Fortunately, although we are no longer in the 1960s, pieces from that era are easily found today. If you prefer, you can also pan bazaars and thrift stores, where you can find pieces of the season or strong inspiration. Below is a gallery to find 60s-inspired items in online stores:
