6 ways to stay close to your family even in adulthood

When you grow up and leave your home, whether to live alone or get married, it is only natural that you are not so close to your family. And if you don't make the effort, it's very easy for the contact to get lost. If this has happened to you, it may be time to reevaluate.

It is a fact that not everyone has a good relationship with their family members and, as an adult, everyone chooses, at least to some extent, how much they are present in their life. It's okay not to want to put up with the toxic behavior or troubled social views of some, or to rather vacation with friends and partners than with parents, but it's also nice to put these things aside and try to keep a healthy approach.

Here are some ways that can help you get closer to your family, even if you have a complicated relationship and your life is busy.

1. Call regularly

If you talk every week for at least 10 minutes with each call, you will start to hear interesting details of their lives. If you're busy, try making calls when you're doing something simpler, such as on the way to work or when folding clothes. Talking on the phone is a way to get closer than just messages or emails.

2. Ask about the stories

Your parents must have stories they never told about their lives and the lives of their ancestors. As you talk, ask about things like what they did as children, what their favorite toys were, life with their grandparents. Finding out more can be really interesting and will give you the opportunity to connect with them on a different level.

3. Send messages to say you remembered them

A message, however short, is a great way to show that you thought about them. Send something that lets them know they are on your mind, this can be very significant.

4. Upload photos

If you're not sure what to say, the images are worth a thousand words. If you went for a walk and saw something someone might like, or went to an event, take some pictures and upload them. This will help keep them informed of what you are doing and will see that you are happy.

5. Have a virtual family game night

Use social media to your advantage and create fun video-call games, such as guessing drawings, or more. You can do this from time to time and create greater closeness.

6. Ask for advice

Asking for advice shows that you trust and value their opinion. If you are uncomfortable opening up about something personal, such as your relationships, ask about something everyday, like the dress you are going to wear to a friend's party. Especially if you don't have much in common with your parents, anything can be a reason to talk.

Even if you have a complicated relationship or have lost contact with your family, it is not too late to resume some things. And it is possible to reject certain aspects and yet wish for their presence in our lives. Also, sometimes relatives we didn't even think about can surprise us and become good friends.
