Greenish vaginal discharge: what it is, what causes it and how to treat it

Every woman has normal secretions that make her vagina naturally moist. Usually this secretion is clear, fluid and odorless, varying in quantity according to the menstrual cycle and the period of arousal prior to sexual intercourse.

Changes in the color or smell of vaginal discharge may be a sign of health problems. Discharge is often a defense of the body to fight bacteria and other microorganisms, including those that are sexually transmitted.

Green spots on the panties are not normal when it comes to their intimate health and therefore deserve attention and care.


Something is wrong

Green discharge, accompanied by an unpleasant, itchy smell in the vaginal region may indicate a condition called trichomoniasis. It is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a protozoan that hosts the uterus and vagina. The disease can also be transmitted by contaminated underwear and bath towels.

Sometimes in some women the infection has no symptoms, says gynecologist Maria Luiza Campos. In other cases, the discharge from the infection may be grayish in color, explains Maria Luiza.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Any type of altered vaginal discharge can be considered a way for the body to warn that it is not functioning properly. It is a warning to see your gynecologist and take care of the problem.


Trichomoniasis cases are diagnosed by laboratory tests such as vaginal fluid analysis or Pap smear. Treatment is with antibiotics that will be prescribed by the doctor and partners also need treatment so that there is no further contamination of the disease. The man may be infected and have no symptoms and, therefore, he should always be treated with the woman, explains the gynecologist Maria Luiza.

Change some habits and protect yourself

Intimate hygiene is an important factor in preventing and even treating vaginal discharge. It is necessary to use products that protect the vagina and do not interfere with the defenses of the genital mucosa. Other simple changes of habit can ensure your intimate health and assist in disease prevention.

  • Prefer the cotton panties;
  • Avoid clothes that are too tight;
  • Avoid the use of daily protectors as much as you can, as they further drown out the intimate region (creating an inviting environment for runny microorganisms);
  • Whenever possible, sleep without panties or spend a few periods without it.

Remember that balanced diet has the role of ensuring the constant production of vaginal lactobacilli (which are the defense cells of the vagina) and help maintain vaginal pH within normal, preventing the proliferation of bacteria foreign to the female body.
