New technique promises scar-free cesarean sections soon

It is not a miracle. Women who give birth by caesarean section may soon leave the hospital without scarring. The tool is BioWeld, which uses a gas-loaded plasma produced by welding torches to close wounds without the need for clamps.

The device costs about $ 4120, and uses plasma at 40C to weld a thin film made from sugar to be placed over the wound to close it.

It only takes about three to four minutes to seal the wound, and the risk of bacterial infection from the gas is minimal. But the benefit doesn't stop there: It also stimulates the growth of blood vessels to ensure a new blood supply to the wound area.

Three clinical trials in women with caesarean sections achieved more effective wound healing than women who had them closed with stitches or staples. Responsible Israeli company IONMED said the device will be available in Europe and the United States by the end of the year. Initially it will be used in women who have had cesarean sections, but will soon be also useful for burn victims and patients who have had plastic surgery.
