Stand Up Paddle: the sport that tones and entertains

Nothing better than combining sport and leisure, isn't it ?! And is that exactly what Stand Up Paddle? in the literal translation of the words: stand up board? delivers! It was no coincidence that the activity became a sensation among Brazilians, attracting thousands of fans, especially in the summer period.

However, despite all this success, many people still do not know or have many doubts about the sport. Thinking about it, below, Andrey Marques, Physical Education teacher and owner of Stand Up Paddle Rio School, clarifies the main issues on the subject.

Which is?

Professor Andrey Marques explains that Stand Up Paddle (Sup, for short) is the act of rowing on a large board with the aid of a paddle.

Beach fashion all over Brazil, Sup is becoming increasingly well-known for being considered an affordable sport that doesn't require much fitness and can be practiced by people of virtually all ages. But it is noteworthy that, like any other water practice, the activity requires care (see below).

Andrey Marques points out that the sport can be practiced anywhere that has a moving surface with large volume of water. That is: at sea, in lagoons, rivers, dams or even in large pools. The bottom line is that the water has a minimum of depth and enough space for paddling.

But surely the best known place to practice the activity is the sea. Professor Andrey explains that, in general, classes start on the sand, with a 10-minute lecture. After that, the practitioner goes straight to sea with the instructor, the initial companion.

To practice the sport you will need: board, rowing, strep and, preferably, a specific lycra suit, as highlighted by Andrey.

Who can practice?

Andrey Marques explains that the most suitable age group for practicing Sup is from 8 to 65 years old. "But it depends a lot on each person," he says.

The teacher adds that there are no contraindications for sports, however, by the basic principles of Physical Education, it is always indicated that the person undergo an evaluation and medical release before starting the practice. Benefits of sport

Among the benefits that sports can offer, the following stand out:

  • It is an affordable sport: men and women can practice. And even those with no board skills can start, always with the guidance of an instructor.
  • The sport provides incredible contact with nature and, in summer, is a great option to cool off.
  • The sport provides an incredible sense of peace and tranquility.
  • Provides more balance and helps with concentration.
  • The activity causes legs and abdomen to be worked so that the practitioner stands and balanced on the board, which tones the muscles. In addition, it is possible to lose about 350 calories in one hour of sport.
  • The sport is very pleasant and, besides providing peace and tranquility, its main attraction is the fact of having fun.

Main precautions when practicing Stand Up Paddle

However, like other sports, Stand Up Paddle requires special care, especially because it is performed in the water. Below you can check the main ones:

  • Andrey Marques points out that it is necessary that the person knows how to swim, to avoid accidents.
  • Andrey adds that if the practitioner is going to paddle, it is essential to do this in someone else's company and always wearing a life jacket.
  • Professor Andrey points out that at the time of practice, the beginner, whenever falling, should do this sideways and releasing the oar, so as not to get hurt by hitting the board.
  • It is interesting that beginners in practice look for a place where there is no strong current and where the water surface is smoother.
  • It is essential that the person use proper equipment, for this, should consult professionals in the area who will indicate the type of board, paddle and vest ideal according to the weight and height of the practitioner.
  • It is important to always use the leash (the lifeline that attaches the practitioner to the board).
  • Before starting the practice, it is essential to look for a qualified professional.
  • It is important to be informed about currents, winds and characteristics of the chosen place to practice the sport.
  • The activity should never be practiced on rainy days with lightning and thunderstorms.
  • It is necessary to avoid the practice among bathers. The board is a big piece of equipment and, in the event of a collision, can hurt.

Taking this basic care and always relying on the advice of trained professionals, you will be prepared to enjoy all the benefits that Stand Up Paddle offers.Best of all, you will exercise and have fun at the same time!
