SUS now offers yoga, meditation and reiki as alternative treatments

A decree of the Ministry of Health published in late March in the Federal Official Gazette includes new modalities of therapy in services promoted by the Unified Health System, the SUS.

In all, there are 14 new activities that make up the National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices, adding to therapies such as homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine, among others.

According to the text published in the DOU, one of the objectives of the inclusion of therapeutic activities is the valorization of popular and traditional knowledge and also of integrative and complementary practices to conventional therapies.

In addition, the DOU also mentions that several categories of health professionals already recognize these complementary practices as a care approach, ie, these therapies are already used as part of the treatment of patients.

The decision of the Ministry of Health follows guidance from the World Health Organization on encouraging and strengthening these complementary practices within national health systems.
