10 Series Available on Netflix That Every Woman Should Watch

You may have read something about the entertainment industry being somewhat macho when it comes to assigning roles to women.

All too often (unfortunately), roles for actresses correspond to stereotypical characters such as the jealous girlfriend, the pretty neighbor or the inconvenient mother-in-law.

No wonder we need separate awards categories for actors and actresses, after all, the denser and richer roles are often written to be played by men, and the roles reserved for women are much rarer.


Nevertheless, we are not completely abandoned. While Hollywood still puts men much more prominently, the series are on the way to being more inclusive and representative of the female gender.

With that in mind, here are 10 Netflix series that feature complex, nuanced female characters, just like real-life women. It's worth watching!

1. Orange is the New Black

The show's main character is Piper Chapman, an upper-middle-class woman from New York who has been arrested for a crime committed 10 years ago. In prison she has to live with women of different backgrounds and ages, and a whole new universe comes into her life.

ILOB devotes several of its episodes to telling the story of the other detainees, showing the family reality of poor, black, Latino, Oriental, and homosexual women. There is even a transgender character in the series.

2. The Good Wife

The plot tells the story of Alicia Florrick, a wife who sees her life turn upside down when her husband is arrested over a sex and corruption scandal.


From this event, Alicia resumes her career as a lawyer after years devoting herself only to her family.

3.Grace and Frankie

Grace and Frankie is a series about two 70-year-old women whose husbands report having a relationship for 20 years. From this revelation, the two need to resume their lives with each other's help.

The series shows situations often experienced by older women, such as invisibility to society and denial of their sexuality.

4. Scandal

Olivia Pope is the owner of a crisis management company and, above all, a woman who knows her role very well: powerful, confident and not afraid to impose her opinions.

In Homeland, CIA agent Carrie Mathinson specializes in terrorism in the Middle East. She is sure that Nicholas Brody, a national hero, actually has ties to the terrorists and is organizing an attack on the US.

As she tries to prove the charges, does the CIA and the people around Carrie begin to suspect her emotional stability? pretty typical, isn't it?

7. The Crown

The Corwn simply tells the story of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the United Kingdom. The series shows the challenges faced by the young queen in having to take the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI.

8. Modern Family

Women do not necessarily have to work outside the home to be strong. In Modern Family, you will follow the life of three interrelated family nuclei, with the comic and dramatic moments of each family.

Claire is a housewife and mother of three who sometimes tries to return to the job market. In some episodes, she is involved with the welfare of the neighborhood. Gloria, in turn, is a beautiful Latin woman and the second wife of a much older man. Their conflicts involve Latinity and often being questioned about their feelings towards their husband. Also noteworthy is the teenager Alex, a brilliant student.

9. Bones

Bones tells the story of the competent forensic anthropologist Temperance? Brenna, who works at the Jeffersonian Institute and writes detective novels in her spare time.Temperance is required whenever police cannot identify the victim of crime through traditional techniques, such as when the body is in a state of advanced decomposition.
The Temperance character is inspired by the life of Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist and writer.

10. Jane the Virgin

As a child, Jane was instructed by her grandmother to keep her virginity at all costs until marriage. But at 23, Jane finds her life turned into a complete mess when she gets pregnant because of artificial insemination by mistake.

The series is filled with three-dimensional female characters who, in addition to caring about their love life, also face challenges related to finance, career and health, like all of us.

Does the list above show some series where we find female characters more richly built than average, showing women who have concerns other than finding the perfect match? not that our relationships are unimportant, but we women also have other concerns.

This does not mean that the series are necessarily feminist (including some of them received criticism for not being so representative of all minorities), but it is worth taking a look at the three-dimensional roles attributed to women.
