Different Uses for Plastic Grocery Bag

The embargo on the distribution of polyethylene plastic bags in the commerce of several Brazilian cities has generated a strong controversy between governmental, consumer protection, nature protection institutions and merchants. Since the decision was to make the distribution of these bags free again, it is important that we learn upcycling, preventing the vagueness of this clash from piling up plastic bags and damaging nature.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the use of plastics by society, even if not as high as the industry, is quite impacting, because the plastic bag, the most common item of disposal, harms both cities? clogging manholes, causing flooding and allowing the proliferation of dengue mosquitoes with water to accumulate; what about nature? polluting the waters and killing animals that ingest it by mistake.

Many people aware of this damage to nature have developed techniques for reusing plastic bags and reusing them, making them useful objects for their own home or for themselves. The invention has been so well accepted that many of these products have been sold and generate extra income for creatives.

Craft with plastic bags

All possible products to be generated from plastic bags originate from one technique: crochet. The only difference between traditional crochet and plastic bag crochet is that instead of wool or fabric, crocheted strips of plastic bags are used to form a ball of plastic thread.

There are no limitations on the crochet stitches to be made with the plastic yarn, nor the result of the end product, including the crochet of plastic bags generates more resistant and waterproof products.

To make this kind of crafts you will need the following materials:

  • Plastic bags;
  • Moisturizing cream ? use a cheap one;
  • Crochet hooks;
  • Scissors.

The way to do it is very simple: start by cutting the handles and the bottom of the bag you will use. Stretch the bag well so that its natural folds are undone. Then fold one of the sides to the middle of the bag and fold again, using the same size as the previous one, leaving an unfolded part. Cut vertical strips the entire length of the folded part of the bag.

Unfold the strips and on the first one cut diagonally to form a point. Take the tip and follow it to the uncut part, cut out by joining the next strip until a single wire is formed.

This huge yarn must be wrapped around the hand to form the plastic ball to be crocheted. The moisturizer should be placed in the hand where the needle will not be used and every time a stitch is made, the needle tip should be wetted in the moisturizer so that the created plastic thread becomes more malleable for the job.

If you're unsure about not knowing about crochet stitches, there are a number of magazines specializing in newsstands and artisan blogs that give you step-by-step braiding. Be sure to unleash your imagination and the potential to make beautiful crafts that further help nature.
