11 home treatments to prevent and eliminate corns

Anyone with corns knows how nasty and boring they really are? Not only are they not aesthetically beautiful, they really annoy your touch, making you feel irritated when you notice them.

According to orthopedist Gustavo Borgo, a member of the medical team of Hospital Samaritano de Sao Paulo and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, corns are a "thickening of the skin due to increased pressure or friction in that specific region where it formed."

But why does this thickening form? He also explains that it is a reaction of the skin to some kind of trauma in order to protect the site that is constantly subjected to minor injuries.

Usually, they appear, according to the doctor, in smaller toes, heel and plantar region of the feet. In the hands appear more in the fingers and in the palm region, being places that are often exposed to aggression.

But after all, can you soften and even get rid of corns at home? Yes there is! Here are 14 easy-to-treat treatments that can help you ease this hassle.

1. Onions

Onions have anti-inflammatory and healing properties that help to reduce and eliminate corns. And the recipe is quite simple: use half an onion and rub in the corns every day before bed, letting the juice get into the area. If it is on the feet, cover with socks.

2. Sodium bicarbonate

Put hot water and 3 tbsp baking soda in a bowl. Leave your feet still for at least 10 minutes. Its exfoliating properties will make the skin soften. After that time, wash your feet and rub them with a pumice stone.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, because of its acidity, helps to improve the healing process and prevents more corns from forming and reduces existing ones. Before bed, wipe the vinegar with a cotton pad soaked with vinegar. The next day, exfoliate with a pumice stone.

4. Castor Oil

Castor oil is great for softening the skin, reducing roughness and helping to soften corns. Dip your feet in warm water and then exfoliate the skin with pumice stone. After removing dead skin, use a cotton with castor oil and secure it with tape. Oil the area every day until the callus disappears.

5. Nettle

This plant has important healing properties and greatly assists in the removal and healing of corns. Blend some leaves and stems of the plant along with a spoon of water. The goal is to form a paste that you will put on the callus, making a bandage with a gauze. Remove the pastes and gauze only after three hours of application.

6. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile not only has the property of soothing the skin, but also helps soften and improve the healing of the site. Make a liter of tea with the herb. When the drink is already warm, put it in a bowl and soak the feet. Then exfoliate with pumice stone.

7. Garlic with olive oil

Garlic has healing and anti-inflammatory properties, while olive oil helps in softening and moisturizing the skin in the callus region. Mash one garlic clove and mix with olive oil. Put the mixture in place and make a gauze dressing, leaving the substance in place overnight. Repeat this every day until the callus disappears.

8. Green Banana Peel

Take a green banana peel and rub over the callus region, making the released juice stay in the region. Or, if possible, attach the shell over the callus and leave it in your sleep. Do this for 5 days or until the callus is gone for good.

9. Ice

When the callus injury is recent (ie, when the region is still reddish), using ice can help soften the condition, reducing swelling and pain. Wrap an ice stone in a cloth or napkin and apply to the region.

10. Talc

Talc's emollient properties help treat and prevent corns. Sprinkle the area and cover with a sock (feet) or gauze (hands) and you will see that over time they will shrink until they disappear.

11. Glycerin

Glycerin also has important emollient properties that can be used to soften and remove corns. Mix 100 g of pasty glycerin with 20 drops of lemon and pass in the region. Without rinsing, let the mixture work all night, but on waking remove the substance as the lemon, when exposed to the sun, can stain the skin.

How to prevent the emergence of corns

As a clinical preventive treatment, orthopedist Gustavo Borgo recommends reducing the pressure in the region, reducing the constant lesions on the site. The doctor stresses the importance of always moisturizing the skin with specific creams to prevent the emergence of corns. In addition, you should always wear comfortable and suitable footwear for each foot and whenever you get one, seek medical attention.

This is because, according to Gustavo, "there are some cases of callus formation due to small bone deformities". Some cases he mentions are those caused very close to the index finger and middle toes, common in women who wear high heels, flat feet (flat feet), bunions or even the case of diabetics who need constant monitoring regarding these injuries due to loss of sensation in the feet.
