Care of clothes in winter

Changes are essential in dressing, especially when changing seasons, but some pieces are essential in the wardrobe and as we do not discard them easily, some care is needed, both in the way of storing and washing, so that even with ironing over time they retain the original aspect of how they were acquired. So here are some prescriptions for how extend the life of clothes winter.

Care of woolen clothes

One of the major stumbling blocks when it comes to putting on wool coats is hair, hair and pillings (those balls that form with the use or friction with other pieces in the wardrobe) throughout the model. Woolen pieces should be washed gently and preferably with mild detergent, as some cleaners may change the appearance of the fiber. Another important detail is to check if the piece is really dry, since keeping it moist can make it smell.

The care is the same for other models, regardless of the weight of the fabric, but with the exception of coats, it is advisable to always keep them folded, as they tend to stretch when hung.

The tips are equivalent to any kind of wool (felt, gabardine, tweed and melton) that are more porous fabrics and knitwear such as knitting.

Give leather parts longevity

Leather is one of the hardest materials to get dirty, but it needs special care because its durability depends on the storage care. Regardless of origin (cow, ostrich, alligator, snake, etc.), leather has collagen on its surface and may dry out when exposed to heat, for example.

The ideal maintenance of the article is to wash every 6 months and from time to time bake it with a leather moisturizer (or pure almond oil), removing the excess of the product with a damp cloth. Do not use body moisturizer, especially those with alcohol in the composition, as it dries the material.

Leather clothes, mainly light colors, can also yellow. An alternative is to clean them with a solution of water and apple cider vinegar (or baking soda) with a sponge. For smelling hides (usually in handcrafted garments), moisten a scented cotton wad and store in the garment pocket.

Leather retains a lot of fluid, when clean it is necessary to let it? Breathe? out of the wardrobe for a day; and when storing never fold or store it in plastic bags as this may cause mold. Prefer to wrap clothing in a dark TNT bag as light can also affect the appearance of the product; or leave it in a wardrobe space that is not accessed often, that is, that does not leave the parts exposed to light.

Another tip is to place a piece of cedar wood (exceptionally this type) near the clothes to absorb moisture in the wardrobe.

Maintain the look of suede

If the maintenance of leather parts requires care, suede clothing (same for chamois and nubuck) needs twice as much. It is a porous material with a velvety surface and extremely permeable; use (even in shoes) and the wrong way of washing end up causing scratches and stains. Cleaning is the same recipe for removing the yellowish leather (water + apple cider vinegar), with the exception that it is essential to press a paper towel at the end of the process to absorb the water and let it dry in the shade? which takes about 3 days.

To remove scratches is a bit more complicated as this should be done by scraping the suede with fine sandpaper, brush with nylon or brass bristles (which varies with deterioration).
