According to Professor Emerson Nunes, owner of a gym that teaches various types of fighting, after the UFC became synonymous with fame and social status, the number of students on its mat almost doubled. "A lot of people have been interested in the fight because it is fashionable now, but once they start taking classes, it really gets to taste and they don't want to stop anymore," he says.

For Nunes, the female audience only has to add to the sport, since the students help to reduce the heavy burden of machismo associated with it. "Women understood that fighting is not a macho thing, it can help even the most delicate of them to shape the body and also work the mind, and of course is a good way to learn self-defense," he says.
