Hand luggage: what is prohibited and allowed to carry

Every passenger is entitled to carry a bag, suitcase or backpack with personal belongings and valuables that will not be checked in and will travel with you on the plane, this is called carry-on luggage.

At check-in time, carry-on baggage is assessed by the airline against a number of criteria to verify compliance with the legal and safety limits on board, so it is important to be prepared and know what is prohibited and what is allowed to carry to avoid embarrassment and seizure of items.

Packing properly and choosing what to pack is a challenge. With carry-on luggage care should be even greater.


The recommendation for the use of hand luggage is that it is an instrument for carrying money, documents, electronic devices, jewelry and other valuables.

If you need to ship these items, declare the value of the goods at check-in to prevent loss and damage.

Accepted criteria for carry-on luggage

According to the National Aviation Agency, you can bring the following items:


  • Suitcase, bag or backpack with a maximum size of 115 centimeters, considering the sum of height, length and width, and weight limit of five kilos;
  • Cash, credit and debit cards and documents;
  • Clothing and blanket or blanket;
  • Umbrella or cane, provided that they are not pointed;
  • Mobile phone, camera, camcorder, laptop, tablet, digital book reader, music and video players and binoculars;
  • Books, newspapers, magazines or any other reading material;
  • Musical instruments, provided that they can pass through X-ray equipment at security checkpoints;
  • Crutches or orthopedic devices used by the passenger;
  • Folding stroller, basket or a comfort baby;
  • Prescription drugs, infant feeding and special diet fluids in the amount required for use during the total flight period, including any stopovers;
  • Duty free perfumes and beverages. These must be taken by a shop owner to the aircraft when the goods will be delivered to the passenger. The products must be packed in sealed bags and with the purchase invoice;
  • Make-ups and other cosmetics in liquids, pastes and gels, provided in containers of up to 100 milliliters and in airtight plastic bags of up to 20 centimeters in width and height. Only one plastic bag per passenger is allowed;
  • Pets in appropriate enclosure with animal health certificate provided by State Department of Agriculture, Department of Animal Defense Office or veterinarian. However, airline regulations must be adhered to, which may require the animal to be checked along with larger baggage.

Prohibitions on carry-on items

For security reasons no weapon, or replica, of any kind may be carried; sharp, sharp objects that can be used to cause injury; matches and lighters whose fuel is gas; Explosive or unsafe, chemical or toxic substances that may endanger the physical integrity of persons or the safety of the airplane.
