Is there a better time for plastic surgery?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions in our office. After all, does the time chosen for surgery influence the outcome?

We have also heard of July as the "month of plastic surgery", but why? Does operate in winter brings a better recovery?

Not always! Winter has some advantages over summer. Because it is colder, the swelling may be smaller compared to warmer days. This is most evident for surgeries such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, facial surgery, where edema (swelling) is most prominent.

Another point to consider is that many plastic surgeries require the use of elastic braces for more than one month during recovery, which is much more tolerable on cold days.

July, in turn, is school holidays and allows more people to plan their surgery and have a proper recovery. Therefore, for these reasons, July became the most wanted month for plastic surgery.

However, more than operating in the cold, there are other factors of greater importance in the programming of the surgery and which imply more strongly in the result of plastic surgery. The first one is to look for a Specialist, and that only the surgeons accredited by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery are, because it is she who supervises the formation of the Specialist.

To be a specialist in plastic surgery you need to attend 6 years of medical school, graduate medical, take another college entrance exam to be a general surgeon, do two more years of residency in general surgery, graduate general surgeon, make new entrance examination for surgery plastic surgery, do 3 more years of residency in plastic surgery, graduate in plastic surgery and after that, pass the specialist test of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

Therefore, 11 years of intense studies, plus a test of the specialty, and only after going through all this and passing the specialist test, is the title of Specialist in Plastic Surgery awarded by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

Unfortunately, today there are many non-specialist doctors performing plastic surgery, claiming to be experts. However, they are not members of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

Another key factor is having adequate time and logistics for recovery, as poor recovery will directly influence the outcome of the surgery. That's better operate in summer and having enough time for recovery than operating in winter and having to get back to work early.

Holidays are also much sought after as an option for recovery as they allow adequate rest and recovery for minor surgeries, avoiding missing the vacation for recovery. Surgery with rapid return to office work, such as breast prosthesis, eyelid surgery, ear surgery, gynecomastia, and intimate surgery allow for proper recovery on holidays, even outside the winter.
