Kimono: Learn how to use your modern version

Although the kimono is a typical costume of Japanese culture, part of the dress and history of the country, it entered the western fashion world at the beginning of the twentieth century at the hands of designer Paul Poiret. He was responsible for rereading the play, adapting it to the reality of the western world. He was not the only one, however, according to style consultant Fernanda Maranho. "Since then, a number of western designers such as Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Pierre Cardin, and also Japanese such as Issey Miyake, Kenzo, Hanae Mori, and King Kawakubo have done their rereading."

So what was once a purely Oriental costume has become part of our closet, even though the kimono we wear today is just a modern version of the original Japanese.

Modern Kimono vs. Traditional Kimono

The fashion consultant says that the kimono, like almost everything involving Japanese culture, is full of poetry and meaning. Also, in Eastern culture, there are seven types of traditional kimonos that are worn by women, and they vary by age, marital status, and occasion.

The modern kimono is very different. ? The only function of the western pieces is ornamental, that is, to make us beautiful and fashionable (at most protect us from a wind)? guarantees Fernanda. This new kimono can even come in many shapes, ranging from jackets like the "kimono jacket" to lighter jackets and dresses and overalls that fasten on the front. Is the kimono modern? can be used as a replacement for blazer, jacket or cardigan, and what makes the look interesting is precisely the variety of options regarding fabrics, textures, prints and colors ?, warns the consultant.

How to use the kimono valuing the different body types

Hourglass body and rectangle body

The hourglass body, as its name implies, is one that mimics the very design of an hourglass, with bust and hip of equal proportions and a slim waist. But the rectangle body also has shoulders and hips of the same proportions, but unlike the hourglass, the waist is not well marked.

For these two biotypes, Fernanda Maranho advises the use of the kimono along with a belt, as the accessory helps to shape the body and makes the look more harmonious.

Triangle body

For women with a triangle body, that is, those who have small shoulders and busts and a wide hip, it is great to wear the kimono - abusing prints, colors, patterns and shine. And the cool thing is to combine it with a darker, straight-cut bottom piece, ”advises the expert.

Inverted and oval triangle body

For those who have the inverted triangle body, with more prominent shoulders and busts and thinner hips and legs, or those who have the oval body, with a fuller top and bottom silhouette and few curves, the great tip is to use darker kimonos than the piece worn on the lower body ?, concludes the consultant.

Matching the kimono

Fernanda also indicated three looks with precious tips to adopt the modern kimono in the production. Check out!

Oriental print kimono

It serves to update the look and you can choose to combine a classic print with modern or basic pieces, as did blogger Anabelle Fleur from Viva Luxury.

Bright Kimono

? Can be used in night looks. It looks beautiful with more sober prints?, Says Fernanda. Who understands this very well is the blogger Deborah Zandonna, who set up an inspirational look for the new year's eve where she wore the sparkling kimono as a highlight in the production.

Printed kimono

Who wants to dare even more in the look, can choose to compose a look with a mix of prints! "The secret is to repeat one of the colors in the kimono on the underside of clothes", advises the consultant. Blogger Tamy Yasue did just that, using the black color of the kimono's bottom and skirt stripes to create a harmonious and beautiful print mix.
