Pregnant Sleep Apnea May Harm Baby's Health

That sleep is so important to our health, you probably already knew. But more than avoiding dark circles, giving mood, memory and concentration to face the day's activities in a good mood, a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that quality sleep prevents a dangerous clinical condition during pregnancy.

According to this study, women with sleep apnea are more prone to a risky pregnancy with babies with poor health.

The breathing problem that manifests during sleep, called apnea, consists of holding your breath briefly during sleep. When breathing is interrupted, does the person wake up? without necessarily regaining consciousness and opening the eyes.

One cause of apnea is excess body fat, which increases tongue muscles and the volume around the trachea, compressing the throat and making breathing more difficult. The disease manifests during sleep, as it is when the body is relaxed and the brain's stimulus to breathe diminishes.

Breathing breaks are considered very serious if they take more than 10 seconds and when they exceed five per hour.

Cases of manifestation of this disorder are more common after the sixth month of gestation, since the membranes of the nose swell with the dilation of blood vessels during the nine months of gestation, reaching a more critical situation from the sixth month.

Among obese pregnant women, the risk of developing apnea is twice as high, so the study's authors suggest that treating obesity before a woman becomes pregnant is the best way to prevent a fragile pregnancy.

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland studied 175 overweight pregnant women. 15% of them had apnea, of which 42% had preeclampsia. Half of the children of women who had apnea needed medical care after delivery.

Apnea during pregnancy should be specially monitored, since if it causes preeclampsia, a serious problem marked by high blood pressure, and affecting various body systems, can cause the restriction of growth of the baby by reducing blood flow. to the placenta.

To assess the possibility of having sleep apnea, the ideal is to seek the help of a doctor, but some symptoms are: snoring, restless sleep, increased urination at dawn, excessive daytime sleepiness, changes in memory and reasoning. Be alert!
