8 things that can make your home tacky or unassisted

In the dictionary,? Tacky? is defined as "what is considered to be in bad taste or not to be refined".

Although it is widely used in many different situations, it is a very relative word, since, in fact,? Tacky? It is not a universal concept and is far from unanimous.

You may have heard, for example, that having a penguin on the fridge is tacky. And maybe even agree with that! But probably the person who decided to have the object at home likes it for some reason.

Well, taste is taste. And each person should be free to decorate their home using the items they find most interesting. Is it not, after all, an object or another that will have the? Power? of making a house totally tacky, but rather some wrong attitudes.

You must be wondering? What kind of attitude ??. And the answer is: attitudes that, in short, are related to exaggeration and show that the environment you live in doesn't match your style / personality.

With this in mind, here are some things that can make your home tacky and / or unclassic and therefore suggested to be avoided.

1. Want to copy someone's house

Did you see the decoration of a famous apartment in the magazine sheets and liked it ?! Or, did you enter your neighbors' house and find the surroundings beautiful? Great. But that doesn't mean you might want to apply the same decor to your home.

• Copy what you think is beautiful in the magazine or decoration show, for example, but not knowing how to apply it to your space? which will most often be quite different from the one you are copying? Is it a big mistake ?, highlights interior designer Malu Goraieb.

Graziella Aguiar, architect and consultant at Master House Maintenance and Renovation, points out that the biggest mistake people can make when decorating is to follow a style or concept that doesn't fit their reality. Not everything that works in one residence works for another. Using the decoration of the neighbor or novel as a reference is great. But the copy will not work, because the measures are different, as well as the people and the reality that live there ?, he says.

It is important to be loyal to your personal needs and tastes. A thing is considered tacky only when it does not match the reality of who is enjoying it. Once the style is defined, it is easy to combine colors and fabrics within it, bringing the expected harmony to the environment ?, adds the architect.

2. Decorate using random items that do not harmonize between them

“I often tell Master House customers that decorating is like choosing an outfit. You think of the occasion, the comfort and the look to define your 'look of the day'. In the decoration is the same ?, comments Graziella.

• When using unplanned random pieces, there may be visual pollution or even a flow with obstacles. The person often ends up spending even more than if they had planned everything for a satisfactory result ?, highlights the architect.

Some people, for example, like to put blanket on the couch. Graziella explains that the best way to use it is, of course, to find a tone that is in harmony with the sofa and other decoration items. “It doesn't have to be exactly the same tone as the couch, but it does have to match something in the room as a whole. A well-chosen highlight color always has a nice effect?

3. Exaggerate the colors

Wall of one color, sofa of another; floor in one tone and furniture in another? Sometimes care must be taken not to overdo the use of colors.

• One has to follow a line of reasoning. Think carefully. Color is where people get it wrong, as many combinations cannot often be imagined. It is important to compare the samples of everything, color of materials to be used, think of the tone of the floor, the type of lighting of the environment, being careful ?, emphasizes Graziella.

4. Overdoing carpets

Rugs are interesting items in the decor. Malu explains that they tend to provide greater comfort to the environment, but they should be chosen according to the flow and circulation that will occur in space.

When choosing the carpet, Malu explains that it is necessary to take into account what will be its use:

Persian decorative rugs: fill the decoration giving color and life. They make up and are usually the center of attention. Ideal for entrance halls, living rooms and bedrooms.

Non-slip Mats: protect the dweller from a slippery floor. They are usually there to help and not decorate, so they need not be the center of attention. Ideal for bathrooms and corridors.

More Furry Rugs: They are ideal for TV rooms and bedrooms where children and adults who like to sit on the floor can be comfortable. These rugs harmonize superbly when they have neutral colors or just one color. Great when they're allergic.

Fiber Rugs and Sisal Rugs: They are great for areas with large circulation. They tend to leave the environment more rustic. Ideal for beach.

Leather Rugs: They are wild pieces and tend to leave the most sophisticated environments. The fur and the touch can vary so much the combination that the rug becomes versatile, ranging from rustic to modern.

The rule to harmonize the rugs with the decoration is: balance. Either color the environment, or color the carpet. Just be careful not to overdo it and leave the environment heavily loaded with information. Less is more? Highlights the interior designer.

5. Exaggerating the use of frames

Malu points out that the picture frame is a very personal item. "Some people like it, and some consider it cheesy," he says. "Just as we must be careful not to overdo the prints, we must be careful not to overdo the amount of photos," he adds.

The interior designer explains that sometimes a frame, with a beautiful, color or black and white photo, can value the environment and the photo itself more than a dozen frames.

It is interesting to see picture frames as a work of art in a gallery, where a piece tends to be valued more when alone than when displayed too close to others. Unless they have something in common, such as color, that will give the feeling of uniformity to the context ?, highlights Malu.

6. Do not harmonize vases and flowers

Malu points out that vases and flowers always bring life to the environment. "But like frames, pictures and posters, it's nice that they have harmony in color," he says.

The interior designer explains that a colorful flower stands out in a neutral vase; while neutral flowers stand out in colorful vases. "It's a matter of harmony and visual balance," he points out.

7. Put pictures anywhere in the house

There is no harm in putting pictures in the house. On the contrary. But it is always interesting to think about where they will be placed.

Graziella emphasizes that adornments in general should always be linked to the personal taste of the residents. • Boards often tell stories, convey a certain message about a person's personal tastes, history and way of life. The amount is relative. It depends on the style of decoration and the resident ?, he says.

"What I always cherish is that the paintings are placed in the right light and height so that they are properly appreciated," adds the architect.

8. Try to show what you are not

The problem is not to place an item or other that you find cool in the decoration of your home. It's really corny to use your home to prove to be someone you really aren't, to impress / please others.

If you don't care much for television, for example, you don't have to spend money to buy that high-end TV just to show it in the living room (since you get frequent visitors and imagine they'll notice it).

If you don't have the habit of drinking wine, don't you have to worry about buying a cool cellar like the one you saw, for example, at a friend's house?

These are just a few examples to show that you shouldn't buy or stop buying, or change anything in your home decor to please the people who visit your home (even if these are people for whom you have great affection and respect) .

After all, you live in the house! And there's nothing more tasteful about being authentic than respecting who you are.

What to consider when decorating your home

But, after all, what to consider when decorating? Isn't it really necessary to worry about the trends and opinions of others?

Graziella explains that the first thing to look at is what you expect from the environment, "what is its purpose, its functionality, what activities do you want to do in each part of it".

After answering these questions, it is important to think about the taste of those who will most frequent those environments: the residents. It is necessary to take into consideration personal tastes and especially the dislikes. It is very important not to have something you do not like at home ?, highlights the architect.

Graziella points out that trends are meant to suggest, not to impose! If within the personal taste and functionality of the environment, the trend suits, great. But shouldn't it be something limiting? ? The important thing is always the well-being of those who will attend the environments of the house ?, concludes.

Why count on the help of a professional when decorating

To avoid small? Slips? When decorating a home, the best way is always to have the guidance of a professional.

The good professional sees beyond aesthetics, cares about form, content and space. Directs the customer and helps them organize their choices. Conveys, through the project, the ideas to the customer in a harmonic and ergonomic way, thus valuing the interior design ?, concludes Malu Goraieb.

So if you can count on a professional to help you with the decor, great. If you can't, that's fine, remember that your home should have its face (and the rest of the residents). Magazines, decoration shows, friends house etc. They serve as inspiration, but never to definitely dictate what you should or should not use in your environment!
