Brazil: safety in breast prosthesis

The most sought after plastic surgery in our country, the breast prosthesis, has always been in evidence in Brazil. Tropical country with body exposure, the pursuit of a sexy breast is a dream of every woman.

Brazilian plastic surgery, known to be the most evolved in the world, along with that of the United States, stood out even more in this area. Because the use of silicone in prostheses has been banned for some time, Brazil has gained experience in handling these prostheses, while the US has used saline (saline) prostheses.

It is well known that the saline prosthesis is more likely to burst, lasts less and empties more often. The silicone prosthesis is stronger, has a texture closer to the natural breast and greater durability.

This boosted the production of Brazilian prostheses, which today is considered one of the best in the world, being exported to all over the world and even to the US, which approves its use.

In the midst of so much media news about dubious prostheses, with improper silicone, having a high rupture rate, I was reflecting. Sad at first, because my specialty has to go through this, doctors and patients have nothing to blame about this whole problem.

The problematic prostheses, made in Europe, have been evaluated by the quality assurance bodies and approved. With the improper quality seal, they were used by doctors who believed in ANVISA. Other foreign agencies have also mistakenly certified such prostheses.

The first conclusion I came to is that the government should bear its responsibility and pay for the cost of exchange surgeries, as it was the one who endorsed the use and certified a poor quality prosthesis, putting the health of many women at risk.

The second and happy conclusion is that Brazil should be proud to have one of the best prostheses in the world and the most experienced plastic surgeons and training for breast augmentation. Brazil is a world reference and the best place in the world to put breast implants. Maybe that's why we have operated so many patients from abroad, who are seeking this surgery.
