Can putting silicone on your breasts give you stretch marks?

Most sought after plastic surgery, the breast prosthesis is undoubtedly a consumer's dream for many women. Some think of enlarging small breasts, others of improving consistency or even correcting some slight sagging.

Whatever the reason, one question is common to all patients: Can breast implants stretch marks?

Stretch marks are scars on the skin formed by the breakage of elastic fibers, ie the fraying of the skin. They can occur every time the skin is abruptly stretched.

This can occur on several occasions, such as rapid growth during adolescence (when it is common to have gluteal streaks), pregnancy (in both the abdomen and breasts), breastfeeding (in the breasts) or during a large gain. weight (in the abdomen, arms, legs).

Thus, the breast prosthesis can lead to stretch marks, due to the rapid stretching of the skin. Although rare, this is more frequent in very large prostheses due to the consequent greater stretching.

Breasts that have already breastfed, which have a certain flab, are at lower risk of stretch marks, since the skin is no longer so stiff and lace more easily than thick, stiff skin.

But what to do to minimize the risk of stretch marks?

First, we must leave the skin prepared for the stretch. Good skin hydration with urea-based moisturizers makes elastic fibers even more elastic, with less risk of breakage.

Therefore, it is always important to moisturize the breast skin at least twice a day, one month before and 3 months after surgery.

Choosing over-sized prostheses also helps, as hydrated as the skin is, too large a prosthesis can lead to breakage of elastic fibers, even if they are quite elastic.

Lymphatic drainage after surgery also helps as it causes the breasts to detach faster, removing a greater strain on the skin. Remember that after surgery beyond the prosthesis, the breasts will be even bigger by the swelling.

Thus, the appearance of stretch marks in breast augmentation surgeries is a very rare event. However, it is always better to be safe, as remedying stretch marks is quite difficult and can be expensive.
