Facebook may be making you fat, find out why

Many of us, as we get up in the morning, immediately grab our smartphones to check out Facebook and stay on top of what's going on in the world and among our friends and family. Although this act seems harmless, the latest study on cell phone use may bring a serious reality: weight gain.

How many hours a day do you spend on social networking sites? An? Three? Six? According to researchers at the Lighting Research Center at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, people who spent two hours using a backlit LED display device? like an iPhone or iPad? had a corresponding fall in melatonin levels. Melatonin is the chemical that prepares the body for sleep, so if your melatonin levels are decreasing, you will have a harder time falling asleep at night. Simply put, you are losing sleep.

What does lack of sleep have to do with the extra pounds? There is a significant link between sleep loss and weight gain. When you stay awake for long periods of time at night, you have more time to eat and the hungrier you will feel. And we all know that late night snacks are usually the most caloric.

So limit the amount of time you spend on your phone before bed and turn off the phone a few hours before you fall asleep.
