How to choose the right material for your deck

The deck is a decoration option that expresses charm and great taste. Besides being a cozy environment, which provides a true invitation to leisure and socializing between family and friends, it is a great choice to add beauty to the external areas of the house, such as balconies, swimming pools and gardens.

Inspired by the ship's deck, the wooden deck tends to be preferred. In such cases, the deck can be custom-ordered or purchased on boards that are positioned under an existing floor or subfloor.

In addition, it is important not only to pay attention to the wood used, which, according to architect Fabiana Sarmento, from ROSA + SARMENTO Arquitetura, from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, must be certified, resistant and properly treated, but also to the installation. , opting for skilled labor.

The architect also states that the correct maintenance of the deck is essential to increase its useful life.

Although woodworking is preferred, there are currently alternative materials to the massive raw material used in deck construction, such as plastic wood, porcelain and bamboo.

Plastic wood

Plastic wood or biosynthetic wood is used in the construction of decks in outdoor areas, where they will be exposed to sun, rain and other weather. Highly durable and almost wood-like material, plastic wood profiles slip less, do not rot or crack, do not splinter, do not mold, and are not susceptible to termites; therefore, they do not require constant maintenance, however, they may weigh more in your pocket. Plastic wood is marketed by companies such as Ecoplace, Allpex, Madeplast, Ecowood and Ecoblock.

Porcelain

The porcelain industry has invested in the manufacture of alternative wood products, which are increasingly loyal to it with regard to appearance. Like plastic wood, wood-mimicking porcelain is highly durable, does not rot or decompose, and the maintenance demand is almost zero.

It is important to remember that in order to ensure a faithful appearance, the careful installation of the material must be doubled, as the seams should be practically imperceptible.

Wood-imitating porcelain is marketed in Brazil by the companies Pau-Brasil Natural (Actual line), Portinari (Eco Nature line porcelain), Portobello (Golden Cinnamon Ecodiversa line) and Eliane (several lines: Natural Wood, High Wood collection). , Wood House, Eterniwood, Tropical Wood Lantic, Sisal and Parquet).

Bamboo

One option that may weigh less on both pocket and conscience is bamboo. Besides being a material that maintains the appearance of wood, bamboo is highly resistant, due to the high amount of fibers in its composition, causes less environmental impact, since it is a renewable plant, which reproduces annually without the need for replanting.

Despite being a sturdy material, it tends to be used as a substitute for wood in the construction of decks indoors. The material is marketed by companies such as Ecori, NeoBambu, EcoTecBamboo and Bamboo Floor.

According to architect Fabiana Sarmento, it is noteworthy that, in addition to the materials mentioned, there is a wide variety of synthetic materials used to replace wood. However, they are new products whose quality cannot yet be fully guaranteed.
