How to ecobag and unite fashion with sustainability

In some Brazilian cities, a law is in place prohibiting the distribution of plastic bags in supermarkets and other establishments.

In other locations, even without the ban, shopping centers offer a discount for those who bring their own bag from home and do not use the plastic bags provided by them.

The reason for this cannot be ignored: plastic is one of the biggest environmental villains, and the bags made of it take over 100 years to decompose.

In addition, plastic bags are also a major cause of flooding in large cities, as they clog runoff networks and prevent rain from draining.

As a result, the need arose for us to adopt a new way of taking our shopping home: these are returnable bags, which have been redesigned and have become the fashion ecobag icon.

? I am not a plastic bag?: Ecobags and celebrities

What sets ecobags apart from the good old bags our moms and grandparents brought (and still do!) To shop at the fair? Obviously, this difference is in the fashion footprint that this item received, becoming a true fashion accessory.

The arrival of reusable bags in the fashion world happened in 2007 and was the responsibility of the English designer Anya Hindmarch, who was the first to put in the bag the expression? I? M not a plastic bag? (I'm not a plastic bag?).

The? Green bag? Anya Hindmarch was adopted by famous artists like Kate Moss, Keira Knightley, Jessica Biel and Lilly Cole. Soon, new eco-bag materials, prints and inspirations soon emerged, which were even seen in the arms of Karl Lagerfield, renowned Chanel designer.

In 2009, fashion journalist Lilian Pacce launched the book Ecobags, Fashion and Environment, a compilation of 120 models of ecobags made from sustainable raw materials such as cotton, jute, bamboo and recycled plastic. The work includes testimonials by big names in Brazilian fashion, such as Alexandre Herchcovitch, Huis Clos and Juliana Jabour.

However, if you want, you can also do your ecobag at home, ensuring a unique model of yours. Detail: no need to sew! For this you will need:

  • 40 x 60 cm Raw Cotton (or larger if you prefer)
  • 2 nylon strips
  • Print mold
  • Ruler
  • Fabric glue
  • Scissors
  • Fabric pen
  • Pencil

Follow the walkthrough to make your own sustainable bag:

1. Measure 2 cm from all edges of cotton, wipe fabric glue, fold and wait to dry to hem

2. Using the ruler, mark half of the fabric lengthwise. Glue both edges to one half of the fabric and fold it in half to glue the sides to form the bag

3. To glue the straps, simply apply fabric glue to the ends of the nylon straps and attach them to the bag.

4. After the glue is dry, turn the bag inside out. This will be the outside of your ecobag

5. Before stamping, put newspaper or cardboard into the pouch to prevent ink from flowing across the pen

6. Place the print mold between the newspaper and the bag fabric so that you can see the design through the fabric and customize your ecobag to your liking.
