Intimate surgery: a matter of well-being and self-esteem

Still little known, intimate plastic surgery may be the fastest growing cosmetic surgery today. Because they are poorly commented and publicized, many women are unaware of their existence. However, with increasing media exposure, demand has grown exponentially. It is common to hear in the office: "Dr., if I had known that I would have operated much earlier!"

As its name implies, intimate surgery is cosmetic surgery that aims to improve the aesthetics of female genitalia. It is also intimate by the way the patient looks at her. Often no one is aware of the surgery, or just a very close person (husband, mother, etc.). It is a surgery that the patient makes her feel good and not for others to notice.

The most sought after intimate surgery is nymphoplasty, also known as labioplasty, which aims to reduce small vaginal lips.

The small lips are two folds of skin that lie internally with the large lips and laterally at the entrance to the vagina. If enlarged in size they become apparent, like a drop of sagging skin protruding through the vaginal slit.

There are women who don't change in locker rooms out of shame. Others are not comfortable with their partner in the clear. Some may even have pain in intercourse or exercise. Candidiasis may also be frequent in some cases.

The second most sought after intimate surgery is the reduction of the Venus Mount, that bulge above the pubis and below the bikini mark. If increased in volume, it can inhibit the wearing of tights, bikini and cause embarrassment.

In most cases, being a fat accumulation, a local lipo resolves. In the rare cases where there is also sagging skin, usually due to heavy weight loss, a removal of a skin spindle helps to stretch and correct excess.

The third most sought intimate surgery is the correction of the great vaginal lips. They are the structures, which are located between the groin and the vaginal slit, usually bulging, hiding the small lips internally.

With age, it is common for women to lose fat from their large lips, becoming flaccid and reduced in volume. This may even make it easier to see the small lips, which may appear larger because they are exposed. Corrective surgery may be the grafting of fat on the large lips to fill in sagging skin or, in rare cases, to remove some skin.

Another intimate but non-aesthetic surgery is perineoplasty, indicated to narrow the entrance of the vagina, usually indicated after normal deliveries and performed by a gynecologist. This, however, does not change the aesthetics, because the change is not visualized.

Common among aesthetic intimate surgeries is the fact that they are performed under local anesthesia, and patients can be returned to office work within three days. They may also be associated with each other. Physical change often accompanies an equal change in self-esteem and a sense of freedom and the end of embarrassment in exposing oneself.
