Types of glasses and cups: know the ideal model for each drink

If you are planning to have a more elaborate dinner and welcome your guests, one detail that helps add elegance to your event is choosing the ideal type of glasses and glasses for each drink that is served.

Although all of them consist of a container capable of containing the liquid that we will take, each model has characteristics that make it more suitable for a certain type of drink.

Thus, depending on their shape, cups and glasses may be able to keep the drink cold, conserve gas or favor oxygenation, for example. Know the main models:

Water bowl

Since the water does not change its flavor at dinner time, your glass needs only to keep it cold or at room temperature, giving the taster elegance. The water bowl is always oversized.

Red wine glass

The glass of red wine has a wide body to allow drink to come into contact with oxygen, enhancing its aromas and flavors. For the oxygenation process to take place properly, only one third of the cup must be filled with each serving.

White wine glass

As white wine is consumed cold, the glass is smaller and shorter than red wine, so there is less heat exchange between the drink and the environment, preventing it from warming. The mouth of this cup should be narrow so that the drink reaches the tongue at the right point of acidity and sweetness. This glass can also be used for rosé wine.

Port wine glass

Port wine is stronger and has a more pronounced sweet taste than red wines in general due to the characteristics of its incomplete fermentation. Because it needs to go through the oxygenation process, it is served in a similarly shaped red wine glass. However, this cup is much smaller, as the drink should be served in small doses.

Liqueur bowl

Being a sweet and consistent drink, the liqueur is consumed in small gulps, just like Port wine. Consumed shortly after meals for digestive properties, the liqueur should be served in a small to medium bowl.

Sparkling and champagne glass

Sparkling wines and champagnes need to be protected from the heat of the hands, so they should be served in long stem bowls. Also called flute, this cup should have a long body and narrow mouth, characteristics that allow the taster to visualize the bubbles and maintain the balance between acidity, flavor, aromas and effervescence of the drink.

Martini or cocktail glass

It is a Y-shaped bowl with long stem and triangular body (wide mouth and narrow bottom). This model prevents the drink from warming with the heat of the hands and allows it to be tasted in small swallows. A classic touch is the addition of an olive or cherry into the bowl.

Margarita Bowl

Although the official name is "coupette bowl", this model is better known as "margarita bowl". It is divided into two regions: the upper one is quite wide, while the lower one is suddenly narrow. This bowl can also be used to serve cold dishes. In the case of margarita, the border is decorated with salt.

Pilsner Cup

Also called tulip glass, this glass is used for tasting pilsen beers. Its tall, conical shape and good wide mouth favors the formation of the collar and brings the aroma to the nose.

Lager cup

Widely used in Brazilian bars to serve draft beer, this glass is sometimes mistakenly called a tulip. It has a slightly bulging mouth and a broader base. It is also used to serve lager beers, as its name implies.

This glass is taller and thinner than the juice glass, which holds about 250 ml. It is ideal for serving cocktails that carry juice or soda and can hold some ice stones.

Glass for cachaça

Tips for washing cups and glasses

Washing of bowls and cups should take some precautions to prevent detergent residues from compromising the taste of the drink on next use. Ideally, wash them only with water or as little soap as possible, then rinse thoroughly.

If it is not possible to wash these parts immediately after use, always pour some water to prevent the drink from staining the bottom of the container? Very common with red wine. If this has already happened, soak the bowl in water and baking soda overnight.

You can dry your glasses and cup on the outside, preferably with a lint-free cloth. However, the inside should naturally dry on an appropriate support and with its mouth down. If you do not have this holder, you can leave your pieces drying on a clean dish towel.
