What to do in a jam

Traffic jams are a difficult problem to solve, especially in large cities. In Brazil, where major metropolises have not yet been able to guarantee quality public transport, with properly functioning subway lines, getting stuck in a traffic jam is almost inevitable. Check out some ideas of what to do to pass the time if it happens to you.

Organize your records

Rearrange your CDs. While it is often the most common thing now to have your favorite songs on a USB stick or MP3, you probably still have a case with some discs left in the glove compartment. This can be a good way to rediscover old music tastes.

Read a lot

Read. Always carry your favorite books, magazines or newspapers in the car. So when traffic is not helping you catch up on reading, taking advantage of idle time to increase your knowledge and improve your Portuguese.

Get even more beautiful

Finish getting ready. Often when we leave home in the morning, we are in a hurry or forget about some detail of makeup or hair, for example. A good strategy is to leave to finish getting ready in the car while waiting for the traffic jam line to walk.

Pay attention to what is outside your car

Notice what happens around you. Traffic jams are good opportunities to observe the architecture of the surrounding buildings or even the people in the other vehicles. These are fun exercises you don't do when you're on the go. Try to see if other drivers have a nervous tic and what they are doing to pass the time.

Organize your phonebook

Clean up your phone book. Delete numbers you do not use. If you find a friend's phone you haven't talked to in a long time, make a call. This way you catch up and help break the stress caused by congestion.

Enjoy to talk

If you have a passenger, take the time to chat, preferably talking about non-traffic issues. Remember that the idea is to use the problem for fun; if you talk about the problem, the tendency is for stress to be even higher.

Enjoy a sound

Make a good selection of songs in advance to listen to at these times. When you're stuck in traffic, release the artist in you, singing along with your favorite performers. In addition to relieving the stress generated by the traffic jam, the fun entertains and also helps to reduce the natural tension of everyday life.

When in a traffic jam, try to keep calm and not use the horn. The psychological stress caused by these situations can be potentiated by excessive noise. Other than that, use your head: honking will not make the congested traffic dissipate and will only make the situation worse. If you are feeling very nervous, try closing your eyes briefly and concentrate on breathing. As you breathe in and out, your body becomes more relaxed and allows your brain to work more smoothly, relieving emotional tension.

WARNING: Do not be distracted while the car is in motion. The tips are only for times when the car is fully stationary.
