Groin darkening: Know the causes and know how to avoid

Located in a region of delicate skin, the groin is subject, for various reasons, to darkening. And no matter how hidden a body part is, no woman likes to see her in this condition, especially in summer, when it's common to wear bikinis and swimsuits, on beaches or pools.

What causes darkening?

One of the main reasons that cause darkening is friction, precisely because the groin is a folding area. In addition to the contact of the area with clothing, skin-to-skin friction may occur, especially in those who are overweight (and have more folds).

The darkening can also be the result of a fungal ringworm, which occurs because the groin is always covered with clothing and also because it is folding area, facing heat and moisture.

Hair removal can also cause the groin to darken. In some people, it causes ingrown hairs, which ignite. And the constant inflammation of the skin results in darkening.

In metal-allergic women, shaving their hair with a blade also favors darkening.

What woman is subject to this problem?

Irene Dantas, a dermatologist member of the SBD (Brazilian Society of Dermatology), points out that mainly dark women and those who are overweight suffer from darkening of the groin.

Isabela Viana, 28, says she recently began to worry about the darkening of her groin. “I tried to settle with some homemade recipes, but seeing that they didn't work, I went to a dermatologist. She warned me of the danger of trying to solve this problem on my own, without the guidance of a professional. She even said that the recipes I used at home may even have aggravated the darkening ?, she says, warning all women about the need to seek medical help as soon as the problem arises.

“The dermatologist then explained to me that the darkening, in my case, happened mainly because I already had dark skin. Then the spots on me appear darker than they would appear on a fair-skinned woman. But the good news is that, with a few days of treatment, I have already achieved results ?, says Isabela.

How to lighten the groin?

Dermatologist Irene Dantas explains that the groin whitening is done with depigmentants and acids, including hydroquinone, phytic acid, kojic acid and azelaic acid, prescribed by the doctor.

How to avoid darkening?

Although there are people predisposed to darkening of the groin, some day-to-day care helps to prevent the problem. Dermatologist Irene Dantas explains that this requires reducing friction.

One tip is to avoid tight, elastic clothes that tighten or cause more friction. Parts should be ventilated to allow skin ventilation and sweat evaporation. For this, the tip is to choose natural fabrics, including for underwear.

For overweight women, the guideline is to lose weight to reduce the friction of the groin skin. In addition, the measure will help relieve heat and sweat in this area.

If hair removal is the main reason for darkening, it is worth discussing with the professional other alternatives to eliminate unwanted skin. People with a lot of ingrown hair, for example, can opt for laser hair removal.

With good medical advice and discipline when doing the treatment (applying the products at home), the woman will solve the problem in the best way possible, being free to wear bikinis or swimsuits and enjoy the hottest seasons of the year without worry!
