Infertility Treatments

Currently medicine already offers several alternatives for couples with infertility problem. Infertility is usually considered after 1 year of unsuccessful spontaneous pregnancy attempts in women up to 35 years.

Infertility treatments are made from the verification of the causes of infertility that can be observed through basic fertility research. This research should be done by the human reproduction specialist and may have the collaboration of a gynecologist and urologist.

In some cases, simply treating some complications in the couple's health already solves the problem. However, some couples need other treatments in human reproduction clinics, such as assisted conception techniques. Here's what treatments can help couples who have a hard time getting pregnant:

Ovulation Induction

If research has indicated ovulation problems or polycystic ovary syndrome, ovulation induction is required. In this treatment, medication administration stimulates the production of eggs by the ovary at the right time. This treatment is part of the IVF, ICSI and intrauterine insemination techniques and should be controlled to avoid multiple pregnancy.

In vitro fertilization

This assisted conception technique, also known as IVF and formerly known as a "test tube baby", consists of removing ovarian eggs and obtaining sperm by masturbation for in vitro fertilization. After formation of the embryos, a maximum of three are transferred to the uterine cavity.

ICSI

ICSI is a variation of IVF and today is even more widely used than IVF because its results are better. This technique consists of injecting a sperm into an egg by micromanipulation. Embryo transfer to the uterus occurs in the same way as in IVF.

The main advantages of ICSI are the high chances of success, which can reach 60% in women up to 35 years and that it is an alternative for men who would have little chance of getting a woman pregnant. After all, in this treatment, sperm is injected into the egg, which practically guarantees fertilization. While in IVF, sperm fertilizes the egg by natural means.

Intrauterine Insemination

In this assisted reproduction treatment, live sperm are inserted into the uterus after ovulation is observed. This insertion should be done within 36 hours after ovulation, which may be natural or by ovulation induction.

This technique is recommended for cases of ovulation disorders, fallopian tube or fallopian tube obstruction (endometriosis) or infertility of unknown cause.

The chances of success in an infertility treatment

The chances of pregnancy with infertility treatments are greatly increased and in some cases are greater than the chances of spontaneous pregnancy in couples with normal fertility. Check out the rates by treatment:

  • In vitro fertilization: 20% chance increase with each attempt.
  • ICSI: 56% increase with each attempt.
  • Ovulation-induced intrauterine insemination: 20% chance with 80% increase with each attempt.

Remember that the chances of pregnancy decrease over time in women over 35 years. In addition, it is important that the couple remain calm and there is no pressure, as stress can be considered a factor that hinders the natural flow of fertilization processes and the charge of having a child can cause problems in the couple's relationship.
