Study shows babies can hear us while sleeping

Babies, especially newborn babies, have the amazing ability to sleep anytime, anywhere, under any circumstances. This happens automatically without us being aware of or interfering with the? System ?.

Does the baby's organism know? exactly how many hours of sleep are required for its proper functioning. Over the months, the amount of sleep decreases and the baby tends to become more active.

What few people know is that baby sleep is not always deep or even uninterrupted. Most of the time, throughout the day, the baby alternates small naps with deeper sleep stages. This information, although little known to the general public, is not new to the experts.

The fresh news is that, moreover, the brain activity of babies during their sleep periods is as intense as that recorded while he is awake.

In a study recently published in the journal Current Biology, a group of researchers used silent scanners to check the activity developed by babies' brains while they slept soundly.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that little ones continue to record an impressive amount of information during sleep. They are able to capture, in addition to the sounds produced in their environment, the emotions of people who may be around them.

The survey, which was based on babies aged three to seven months, pointed out which areas of the brain were activated according to what other people expressed through voice: sadness, joy, anger or feelings of neutrality.

The activated brain areas were, for the most part, the same as those activated by adult people to respond to these emotions when they were awake.

Understanding why babies record such amounts of data while sleeping is the new challenge for these scholars. One hypothesis is that this is evolutionarily necessary, as recognizing these nuances of human behavior can be very useful throughout life to let us know what is going on with the people around us. However, further research should be developed so that we can, in fact, reach definitive conclusions.

For now, it is enough to know that our babies do not rest that much in their long periods of sleep and thus pay more attention to the reactions and feelings we convey to them through our voice and gestures, even while they sleep.
