5 Tips for Being a Better Coworker

You do everything together: face the slow morning, have lunch, overcome obstacles, celebrate achievements and even share a birthday cake every now and then. We could be talking about your friends or family, but in fact, we are referring to your co-workers.

If you work for a company, it's inevitable to spend many hours of your day sharing space with complete strangers. This, however, can be much more enjoyable if you strive to make connections and are a competent and helpful co-worker. Here are five tips for building a good relationship and being well-liked among your colleagues and superiors:

1. Eliminate non-work attitudes

Maybe you work for a more modern company and have the freedom to dress as you please or make your own schedule. But as attuned as the company may be, it is still a place to work, and you should beware of attitudes that are unrelated to your tasks.

Even if cell phone or social networking is allowed, for example, you can make a bad impression in front of colleagues and superiors by spending a lot of time talking on the phone, texting on WhatsApp or watching kitten videos on Facebook.

Likewise, sharing very personal information, such as telling all the details about your meetings with crushs, can cause you problems. By the way, this can happen even in a nonverbal way, so it's safer to avoid showing up to work all the way down or in the same clothes as the day before.

2. Try to improve the quality of conversations with colleagues.

Praising the company's new coffee brand or commenting on non-stop rain are great ways to start a conversation, but more needs to be done to really create a connection. That's why it's important to be interested in knowing how your little girl's daughter's party was, and if possible, see some pictures if she wants to show you.

But to keep things on a more professional level, take the initiative to look for your colleagues to discuss work-related issues, such as their opinion of a presentation you have made? and really take their feedback into consideration.

3. Know when you should be more humane

Maintaining a professional attitude does not mean avoiding any kind of personal bond with other people, especially within the Brazilian culture, which values openness and receptivity. So you can show a little of your human side by joining team lunches, learning the kitty to buy a cake for the birthday boy of the day or bringing a box of chocolates to share with colleagues from time to time.

Also, be sure to clearly express your gratitude when a colleague helps you in some way, even if it is really their obligation.

4. Credit the true owner of a successful idea

The corporate world is full of disputes and competitiveness, but doesn't that mean you can take someone else's idea to get along? In addition to being a huge lack of ethics, you may end up being unmasked in the future.

So always give credit to the colleague who helped you design a project or who showed you a way you could find a solution. By doing so, you show that you have such confidence in your ability that you do not have to hide that you have been collaborated by others, as well as reinforcing your connections.

5. Share your knowledge

Is your colleague banging his head with a problem you know how to solve? Then ask if he needs help and if so give some suggestions on how he can proceed. If he is a nice person, he will make sure to thank you and give you credit for the tips (as we mentioned above).

Your knowledge, incidentally, can be used even in situations that do not concern work directly. For example, if your colleague is looking for a dentist and you know a wonderful professional who still meets the company's plan, make the referral. In addition to helping both, you will create a stronger connection with your colleague.

After all, since we spend so many hours of our day at work, the best thing to do is to make it a pleasant environment in which you are surrounded by people who trust you. It is not necessary to become intimate with all your colleagues, but creating stronger relationships will help your way inside and outside the company as well.
