Flat Iron: Common Mistakes You May Be Making

Like the dryer, flat iron is a great ally of feminine beauty. It's super-practical and gives women the desired result in minutes!

Even women with practically straight hair have probably used the flat iron at least once in their lifetime to achieve even more perfect straightness.

However, as it is a device that is in direct contact with the wires, its use requires special care. But are you using it correctly? Isn't flat iron heat harming your wires?

Below are some common mistakes many women make when using flat iron. And be careful to, if appropriate, eliminate any of these habits from your life!

1. Leave long iron on a hair spot

According to Luiz Cintra, hairstylist at Salon Emilia Borges Broklin, the most common mistake of women when it comes to flat ironing is to leave the equipment at some point of the hair for a long time. "Usually this happens at the ends, because, in order to model the hair, she ends up leaving for a long time, trying to turn her hair," he explains.

2. Pass the flat iron repeatedly on the wires

Another common mistake, according to Luiz Cintra, is the fact that women repeatedly iron the flat iron in the same lock. "This and the above procedure greatly increase the temperature of the hair, accelerating the drying process and sometimes even breaking the hair," he adds.

3. Flat iron everyday

In the opinion of hairstylist Luiz Cintra, the ideal is to make a good brush and, only in minimal cases, the flat iron is indicated. • For example, in situations of women who have very wavy hair, who lose the straight effect very fast. For all other hair, the dryer and the brush will work. In this scenario, could the flat iron be used only to brush up the hair the other day ?, he says.

4. Forget about hydration

"The important thing is to know that the more we use the flat iron, the more often we have to hydrate the wires in order to keep them more nourished and malleable," says the hairstylist.

5. Buy any flat iron

It is essential to choose a good flat iron that is also suitable for your hair type. Nowadays we have several options to buy this instrument. The ceramic plates keep the hot temperature more stable, which helps in the brightness of the wires ?, says Luiz Cintra. I also point out the temperature display plates, which helps to choose the right temperature for the various procedures we can do ?, he adds.

The professional also reinforces that the flat iron should only be used in dry wires (see below). "Drying the wire with the help of flat iron is not indicated, unless a specific flat iron is used for this type of drying," he says.

Regarding the size of the flat iron, the larger ones are more suitable for longer hair and more disciplined strands. "The smaller flat iron, are indicated for shorter hair, fringes and ideal for travel, and can be taken anywhere in the bag, since they use little space," adds Luiz Cintra.

6. Flat iron with damp hair

According to hairstylist, there is even on the market flat iron indicated to dry and straighten your hair at the same time. “But with my years of experience, I prefer to do the process on already totally dry hair. The problem with flat ironing the damp wires is that the high temperature of the instrument will eventually boil the water contained in the wire and dryness will be inevitable, and in some cases may even break the wire completely ?, he adds.

7. Forget the thermal protector

Thermal protectors are excellent for shielding the wires and are super suitable for flat ironers. • Thermo-activated products need the heat from flat iron to release their assets. In addition to protecting the threads, they give finishing and texture to them. So always look for thermo activated products or thermal protectors and use them before the dryer and flat iron ?, explains Luiz Cintra.

8. Leave the wires completely straight

This is not a mistake in itself. But it is true that if the hair is straightened completely straight, parallel to the face, the appearance of the strands is not as natural. The tip, then, is to move the flat iron through your hair, "following a C shape", which will eventually lead the ends to turn inward.

Protect wires from flat iron heat

Carolina Marçon, dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, explains that heat is a common source of damage to hair. "It produces a condition known as 'bubble hair', which occurs when the water in the hair, which is responsible for the hair's flexibility, heats up and evaporates, leading to the formation of bubbles within the stem and consequent areas of cuticle loss," he says. ? Some signs that this type of damage occurs are: hair that smells burnt, frizz on the brittle tips and threads? he adds.

Thus, the dermatologist points out that protecting the hair from excessive heat is essential to keep it healthy. "It is worth noting that heat damaged hair can not be repaired, the damaged area will have to be cut," he warns.

But knowing that dryers and flat iron are useful and widely used by most women, dermatologist Carolina gives some tips on how to prevent heat damage:

  • Allow hair to dry naturally whenever possible;
  • When using the dryer, avoid the higher heat setting. Start at a lower temperature and gradually increase;
  • By straightening the hair with the? Flat iron? ceramic, put a damp towel on the device to protect the hair from direct heat;
  • Moisturizing your hair regularly helps somehow improve the appearance of heat-damaged strands, but stopping the source of damage is critical if necessary.

Now you know: the use of flat iron is not forbidden, but asks for special care not to damage the hair. Stay tuned and use the device only to your advantage!
